Chapter 6
I hid in my room the rest of the day, ignoring Peyton when he came knocking on my door around dinner and begging me to please let him in. I’d never been so grateful that we’d had sex that morning so at least I didn’t have to see him until the twenty-four hours was up.
It was just all too much. What happened was too much. All the changes in my life since Scotland were too much. My feelings for Peyton were too much when he basically betrayed me. The different stories swirling around in my head were too much.
And I couldn’t stop crying. Not just because Peter had broken my nose and split my lip but because everything was such a mess and I didn’t know who or what to believe.
Once all the tears dried up, I rolled over and realized I wasn’t going to get any sleep anytime soon. I saw it was two in the morning and decided to go for a swim. My hippo needed out when I got this upset and water always soothed me.
On the way out to the backyard I went through the kitchen. I paused by the pantry and snagged Peyton’s Oreos. It was his fault I was this upset anyways and I hoped he had a craving for them tomorrow because I was so bummed I’d probably eat the whole damn package. I scarfed several down by the time I got to the pool, setting them aside on my discarded shorts.
I heard a noise as I climbed up the ladder and turned in the direction. It seemed I wasn’t the only one who was having a hard time and needed to let their animal out. Unless Peyton normally had a llama on the grounds that I had yet to see. I ignored him and lowered myself into the balls-numbing cold water and shifted.
I was grateful it was a warm night in Omaha for March, but the water was still fucking cold. I needed to figure out how to get a heater in my kiddie pool, that was for sure. I floated around, trying to let the water soothe my nerves as it always had before but it wasn’t working. Mostly because I think the situation was too big and the water too cold to work.
It also might have been my mate staring at me, back in human form. I huffed, splashing water at him in a clear indication I wanted to be left alone.
“I know you want me to go,” he whispered as he leaned on the short, plastic frame of the pool. “I was going to go back inside and leave you alone but I just couldn’t. Not until I explain a few things.”
I rolled my eyes. Like I had a choice? I couldn’t yell at him to leave in animal form.
“My father is a Duke,” he sighed. “I’m almost twenty-five hundred years old but he’s older obviously, over three thousand. Living that long makes a strong paranormal. He’s always been royalty of some form, born into it under a long-ago dead system of how things ran in England.
